FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What are your breakaways made from?
Our breakaway glass is made of some very brittle plastic-like resins that work together to make the final product easy to break but still look, sound, and feel (minus the weight) like real glass. These are not made of sugar and none of our breakaways are edible!
  • Are your breakaways reusable?
Generally, no. Our breakaway products are not intended to be used more than once, although broken shards might be nice to keep on hand for future projects where previously broken glass may be needed, as long as you keep it stored in a safe place away from children. The glass should last quite a while when kept in ideal environments (dry and out of direct sunlight).
  • Are your breakaways safe?
Our breakaway products tend to be much safer than using real glass or ceramics, however serious injury may still occur if used improperly or without the supervision of a qualified professional. Please don't use any of our products without a professional overseeing and directing. It is ultimately up to each individual stunt coordinator to use their best judgment and utilize this object as they deem safe. By purchasing items from us, Damage On Demand is not responsible for any injury resulting from the proper or improper use of this item.
  • Do you accept returns?
Unfortunately, because of the fragile nature of breakaways, we aren't able to accept returns. However, in the event that your order arrives damaged in transit, just notify us within 48 hours of delivery and we will either send a free replacement for the damaged piece or pieces, or issue a coupon or credit for the value of the damaged piece or pieces (method of reimbursement is at the discretion of Damage On Demand). For free replacements, we do require you to cover the cost of shipping. Also, please note that free replacements and credits/coupons are limited to a maximum of twenty-five (25) percent of the value of the entire order. These stipulations are in place to prevent bad seeds from taking advantage of our unique policies. In the past, we did not offer any type of reimbursement due to the fragile nature of the products, and many other breakaway companies still do not offer any type of refund. When we ship orders, we package each order in the most secure way possible with extra padding and safety measures, but obviously, we can't control how delivery teams handle these packages. While we clearly label each shipment as fragile, sometimes accidents in the shipper's warehouse/delivery truck happen, and pieces can sometimes show up already broken. For any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us.
  • Do you make custom breakaways?
We do! We are definitely open to hearing your ideas and production needs, and depending on the scope of the project, working with you to find the perfect solution. Feel free to reach out to us to discuss your project.
  • Can breakaway glass hold liquid?
Our breakaway glass props can usually hold room temperature liquids only! We cannot guarantee this, though, as variables in the type of prop as well as the type of liquid may present unfavorable outcomes. If you dowant to put some liquid inside one of our breakaway glass props, we recommend only adding water (or water with food coloring) and doing so directly before the prop is broken. DO NOT CONSUME ANYTHING THAT MAY BE PUT IN OUR BREAKAWAY PROPS.
  • Can you ship breakaway props?
We can and we do! However, shipping breakaway props comes with risks: In the event that your order arrives damaged in transit, just notify us within 48 hours of delivery and we will either send a free replacement for the damaged piece or pieces, or issue a coupon or credit for the value of the damaged piece or pieces (method of reimbursement is at the discretion of Damage On Demand). Also note: Shipping these pieces requires more care, materials, and planning than your typical package in order to provide the best chance of surviving shipping. Because of this, breakaway shipping costs are quite a bit higher than standard shipping costs.
  • Is there an order minimum?
Short answer: No. Long answer: Nope.
  • What is the lead time for breakaways?
Most products are made to order. As soon as you place an order, we begin the process of measuring, combining, pouring, curing, cleaning, quality checking, shipment planning, packaging, etc....WHEW! Obviously, the speed of production depends on the size of the order and your position in the queue, etc. For reference, a typical single breakaway glass piece will ship within 3 business days. Please contact us here if you need anything by a certain date.
  • Why is shipping so expensive?
Shipping breakaway pieces requires more care, materials, and planning than your typical package in order to provide the best chance of surviving the shipping process. Because of this, breakaway shipping costs are quite a bit higher than standard shipping costs. With that said, we cannot guarantee breakaways arrive completely intact 100% of the time, so we highly recommend selecting the shipping option which includes insurance.
  • What happens if my breakaway breaks during shipping?
Shipping breakaway props is tricky. • Do the breakaway pieces look exactly like the photos?
While we try our best to keep a relatively close consistency each time we make a prop, many variables can slightly alter the aesthetic of the piece. Bubbles, slight imperfections, and other inconsistencies are an inevitable part of the breakaway process, however, most of these will be nearly invisible on camera for the short time they will be in frame, especially after post editing and any labels, paint, etc. that you may apply to breakaways. Bubbles and imperfections are most noticeable in clear breakaways. Nevertheless, rest assured, the quality and safety will remain the same, under the supervision of a trained professional.
  • Can you make sheet glass for windows, etc.?
Until we begin to receive enough requests for large sheets of glass to justify aquiring the equipment and material needed to make them, we currently work with very small sheets. Please contact us with information regarding what it is you are looking to have made, and let's discuss our options.
  • Will these breakaways work for what I need?
Our breakaway glass shatters visually much like real glass, and even sounds pretty close to actual glass. And because of Murphy's Law, we highly recommend ordering one or two more pieces than what you think you'll need. Mistakes happen and sometimes it's good to have a couple practice scenes with a duplicate piece. Contact us if you're unsure or if you have any questions regarding our products.
  • Do you keep stock of some items?
Most of our breakaways are made to order, although sometimes we will have some pre-made stock on hand.
  • How long will breakaways last?
While we don't have a definitive answer at this point, primarily because unknown variables can affect the shelf life of different pieces, it is advised to use your breakaways within a few months of purchase. This helps to ensure the glass hasn't softened over time and become a safety hazard. We also would recommend avoiding all moisture and direct sunlight, and storing all breakaway pieces in a room temperature, dry space, and they should last quite a while. We have personally shattered breakaway glass that has been sitting for nearly a year and was just as fresh as new breakaways however, this is not recommended. But why wait? Go create some damage!! (Safely and responsibly, of course).
  • Can breakaways be painted?
While it is entirely possible to paint breakaway glass, we can typically accommodate the most common glass colors. If you need a glass color we don't offer on our website, please contact us with your request! PAINTING SAFETY: If you intend on painting breakaways to match your design needs, it is recommended that you be sure that anything you apply to the piece will not add any rigidity or strength, especially if breaking on actor(s). Also, make sure to not apply anything that will hold onto broken fragments and prevent them from breaking and falling away (ie. rubber-like skins, etc.) If you are unsure of the affect any paint or additive will have on the prop, it is recommended to purchase an additional piece or two in order to test it out before using. It is ultimately up to each individual stunt coordinator to use their best judgment and utilize this object as they deem safe and appropriate. By purchasing items from us, Damage On Demand is not responsible for any injury resulting from the proper or improper use of this item.
  • Can labels be used on breakaway bottles, etc.?
Yes, they can. In many productions, they will have an art department that will create and apply custom labels to breakaway bottles. If you are unsure of the affect any paint, adhesive, label or additive will have on the prop, it is recommended to purchase an additional piece or two in order to test it out before using. It is ultimately up to the individual stunt coordinator to use their best judgment and utilize this object as they deem safe.
